Charleston Animal Society Spay Neuter Clinic

Edisto Operation Stop Overpopulation, 65 animals spayed and neutered in one morning!!!
On Friday, March 27th the Charleston Animal Society located at 2455 Remount Road will host over 65 animals that will leave the shelter changed for life. We have gathered a team of volunteers, staff members, surgical technicians and veterinarians to pick up, deliver, process and spay/neuter animals from Edisto Island. Beginning at 6am Friday staff and volunteers will start gathering the animals for this life-saving effort to end Pet overpopulation.

“Spaying and neutering is the key to reducing the number of unwanted animals in our community,” says Dr. Lucy Marlowe, Director of Medical Services, CAS. It also reduces many common problems such as spraying, roaming and heat behaviors. “The health benefits are tremendous: pets live longer, remain healthier, and risks of certain cancers are eliminated.”

The Charleston Animal Society along with the ASPCA Mission Orange, is working hard to put an end to the tragic euthanasia and homelessness of healthy animals by addressing the animal overpopulation crisis at its source—in the heart of our local communities that most need our service. We have a pet overpopulation problem in Charleston with more than 12,000 unwanted and homeless pets a year entering our shelters. The Edisto Island “Operation, Stop Overpopulation” is a large step forward in addressing this important issue. With a total population of 1,900 people living on Edisto Island, the number of animals being spayed and neutered will make a significant mark on the pet overpopulation problem for many years to come. If left unaltered the number of animals on the island could easily reach over 6,000 in a period of ten years.
(based on 28 female dogs and 14 female cats)
