Our family adopted Miles from the JASPCA in November 2007(Leeds Ave). He is a Fox Terrier 9 months old.

I remember seeing him in his cage with those beautiful eyes. He was standing there looking at me and I knew from the moment I saw him that he was going to be my dog! I took him outside for a walk and told my Mom, this is the dog for us.

My little sister Breanna was so excited about Miles coming into our family. It's a lot of work taking good care of him, but Miles is more than a dog, he is a boys' best friend.

I am so thankful for the JASPCA and all the hard work they do to provide care for all animals.

Thanks again

"Genieveve"  Found a Forever Home She is a 1 year old Rat Terrier that came into the Center as a stray off the streets of the lowcountry. Her right front paw is broken in three places but she still has the energy and joy associated with the breed. After spending two weeks in foster care for Kennel cough she is awaiting a forever home at our Longpoint Road facility. Genieveve is under the care of Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Bianucci and will need to make weekly visits for x-rays and to check on the healing progress of her injury. You can help injured animals by donating to our Carstarphen Fund. The fund was set up in honor of a     four legged friend who was lost

I adopted  Stormy from the Leeds Ave. facility on 9/30/89.  That was only 9 days after Hurricane Hugo .  She was a 6 month old stray at the time.  She was so shaggy that I couldn't tell  if she was coming or going.  She was eager to get out that cage and go home with someone.  I had no intention of adopting a dog at that  time, but I couldn't resist her.  I'm so glad that I let my heart overrule my head on that day.

She's now 16-1/2 years old and is near the end of her life here on earth.  (She has cancer and kidney failure).   She's been such a very a special friend to me.  Stormy is  proof that there are wonderful animals waiting for a loving home.
I'm attaching a picture of Stormy made a few months ago.

Thank you Gloria Padgett

Editor's Note: Stormy passed over the Rainbow Bridge on 11/07/05 She finally lost the fight to the cancer she had been fighting so bravely. Our hearts go out to Gloria in her time of loss...Thanks Gloria for liberating her from the shelter and finally liberating her from her suffering on earth.

TODAY IS A SAD DAY

It's 5:30 a.m. and I'm sitting at this computer, having a cup of coffee and thinking about my day.  In a little while, I'm driving up to Myrtle Beach to take some depositions in a bad car wreck case. I'm thinking about those and how I want to order and word my questions.

And I'm thinking too about many other things, getting everyone up and started for school, have the newspapers come? what suit and tie to wear? what about the discovery that I marked up in four other cases yesterday, when to get to part of that stack of reading that needs to be done, how's the weather?what happened in the World Series last night, which phone calls need to be made while driving this morning and a couple of other things too.

But more than anything else, I'm thinking about our sweet puppydog Lorie this morning. And I've been thinking about her a lot these past weeks and days and she is on my mind in a very heavy way this morning.

She is 15. She's a pound puppy. Years ago, she found us while the children were at the John Ancrum SPCA looking for a dog. When they brought her out for a 'test walk', she ran to the car and that was the end of that. She licked the face of our newborn daughter who giggled and cooed, much to the horror of my wife and to the absolute delight of the children. Thus it began.

She has raced one million times across the yard, been doting wife to scotties Winston and now Teddy, watched the world go by with calm dignity, been blithely 'trained' by the children, has held conferences on the old picnic table with youngest child Rosena -The Nudist of Spring (When the weather started warming each year, the youngest would take all her clothes off and sit and visit with Lorie; it was the signal  to the entire old village that Spring had arrived.)

She's been tough as leather, sweet as sugar, better than good, more faithful than could ever be written. She's fought off illness and injury, never whimpered, always been there with her big brown eyes and her steady gaze. She's always come when we called.

Today is her last day. She is sick and broken down now. Her legs don't work, her skin is in tatters, she cannot keep her weight, her hearing is gone, her eyes are clouding, her mind is confused and vacant. She falls and collapses now. It has been a sad downhill course to watch.

We'll put her down this afternoon when I get back from Myrtle Beach. We finally made the decision with Dr. Shuler yesterday. We could not in good heart and conscience watch her deteriorate any longer. She, despite the best efforts of our wonderful vets, continues to falter faster and faster.  So, at 5 o'clock, we'll wrap her in a blanket and hold her and tell her goodbye and that we love her so much.

And she'll be set free. And we will miss her terribly and always remember her wonderful ways and the sweet puppy life we were lucky enough to have shared with her for such a long, rich time.

And indeed, that is the end of that.  God Bless You Sweet Lorie. Always.

Echo will always have a special place in our hearts here at the SPCA. He is a wolf hybrid. He was taken to the Eagle Wolf Foundation in Sevierville, Tenn. in the hopes that he will find a good home! Last we heard he was adapting to his new surroundings well. I guess he is a real mountaineer!
Dear John Ancrum SPCA:

I have been reflecting on my blessings during this holiday season. One of the biggest blessings my husband Andy and I have is our dog Simon. We adopted him from the John Ancrum SPCA, Mt. Pleasant location in July 2001. We feel so good about having adopted a homeless animal and love Simon dearly. He is about 2 years old. We have enclosed a recent picture. He loves exercisingm and we do our best to get him as much exercise as possible. We believe he has some Greyhound in him as well as Dalmation. He loves going on long walks, running on the beach, catching the frisbee and of course enjoying lots of hugs and kisses and dog treats! Please accept our donation to the SPCA. We would like for our donation to be applied to the Mt. Pleasant locations Wish List. We noticed when we adopted Simon that it needed some things. Hopefully our donation will help. Happy holidays to the staff of the SPCA. You provide the community with a great service. Adopting Simon is one of the best things we have ever done. He is very loved.
Sincerely, Courtney

Dear Kay,

I wanted to tell you a story about why I got this dog. Growing up I had a mix lab/mutt; I had her for about 16 years until I lost her this past Memorial Day, she was also JASPCA Alumni. Since the loss of my dog, I have had two little girls that I am close to, search for the next perfect dog for me.

I recently had a birthday and this is the reason I am writing to you. I received one of the best gifts ever, and that was a free adoption certificate, for the JASPCA, given to me by the two girls and their parents. The Thursday morning you had Jasmine on channel 4, the two girls and their mom called me and said I needed to go see her at the pound because she was house trained and played well with other dogs.

When I arrived at the pound I wasn’t set on getting her or even a dog at that particular moment, but I did take my mom’s corgi so I could see if they would play and get along for Doggy Camp. But I did fall in Love with 2 dogs, Hobbo and Jasmine. However Hobo did not get along with the Corgi and Jasmine did. But what really made my mind up about Jasmine was that her estimated date of birth was November 5, 2003 and she was turned over on November 3, 2004 (which was my birthday) so I knew she was the dog for me.

Now that I’ve had her for about 2 and a half weeks, she has been riding along with me during work, been swimming at a clients house on Shem Creek, getting dog bones at all the lumber yards I go to, adapted to a new name (Shiloh), and is learning new tricks daily. She now sits, speaks, shakes your hand, lays down, and goes to her dog bed when told to go to bed.

But I wanted you to know that I would not have such a great dog if it weren’t for the gift certificate and the two little girls, it was just the gift that I needed. I just wanted to recommend the adoption certificates for the holidays. I think you should talk more about the certificates, while on the news and the radio. It was only by luck that the family heard of the dog adoption certificates. I tried calling into 95SX the past 2 times you have been on but have been unlucky getting thru, they just seem too busy to pick up the phones.

The certificates are the perfect gift for someone thinking of getting a dog or cat in the near future. The best part about it is, it allows a person to give you a new best friend but allows you to pick out the animal.

Keep up the good work Kay and tell Tonya good luck with her chili. I am going to try to stop by for a sample on Friday when she is at the Appliance store on Friday.

Sincerely,

Charles Allen Bruce

P.S. Shiloh says hello and thank you, she is sleeping under my feet right now with all four legs in the air so I can rub her belly and work on the computer.
