Ways to volunteer 

 
Dog Feeding and cage cleaning
Job Summary:  Help our staff get ready for adoption hours by assisting the feeding of the dogs in the morning as well as cleaning their cages to make them presentable to get them adopted into a forever home!
Hours needed:  8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
 
Cat Feeding and cage cleaning
Job Summary:  Help our staff get ready for adoption hours by assisting the feeding of the cats in the morning as well as cleaning their cages to make them presentable to get them adopted into a forever home!
Hours needed:  8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
 
Dog playtime
Job summary:  Our dogs need their exercise and play time.  Help by taking them outside and giving them socialization to be ready for their new homes.
Hours needed:  Anytime during shelter hours
 
Cat playtime
Job summary:  Cats love attention!  Take the time to play and cuddle with them, you might even be able to show a potential adopter all the great things about our furry friends!
Hours needed:  Flexible during shelter hours
 
Dog bathing/cat grooming
Job summary:  If you don’t mind getting a little wet this is a great way to spend some time with the animals and help our staff by getting them clean!
Hours needed:  Flexible during shelter hours (staff assistance necessary)
 
Outside cleaning/yard work
Job summary:
  Our dogs love to play hard; this also means they make a mess.  We can always use help keeping the grounds looking neat so that perspective adopters can see the animals in the best environment possible!  We also love to have groups help with our landscaping.

Help in the adoption room
Job summary:  Choosing a pet is a big decision for the adopter and the adoptee!  This is a great way to help people find their perfect match and place an animal in its forever home.  Our volunteers get to know the animals well and can be great at finding the perfect pair.

Greeting the public
Job summary:  On the weekends we are particularly busy – this is a great time to have someone welcoming guests as they arrive.  You can help answer questions, point them in the right direction, and hopefully send them home with an animal!

IT/Website Help
Job summary:  So much of the world is driven by the internet so we want to keep up.  We try to keep all of our animal’s photos on the website so that potential adopters can see them in the comfort of their own home.  It is a huge help to us to have their pictures taken and posted on our website.
Hours needed:  Flexible during shelter hours
 
Shelter Retail Store
Job summary:  We have a great retail store in our shelter.  We can always use extra help with inventory, pricing, organizing, and working at the store on the weekends.
Hours needed:  Flexible during shelter hours
 
Adoption weekends
Job summary:
  Several Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month we participate at various pet stores throughout the community for adoption promotions.  Our volunteers come and pick up an animal or two, along with their “survival kit” and take them to the location to promote shelter adoptions.
Hours needed:  Saturdays and Sundays
 
Event Staffing
Job summary:  The Charleston Animal Society has several fundraisers and “friend-raisers” throughout the year.  We also participate in a wide variety of community events.  We always need help staffing our Chili Cook-off, or at a festival to talk to the public about our organization, or making calls to secure art for our Furry Affair.  You name it!
