The Charleston Animal Society Offers Educational Programs

The Pet Buddies Club, sponsored by the Charleston Animal Society, is part of an educational program that teaches middle school students about the care and responsibility of owning a pet; the importance of spaying and neutering pets; and the prevention of animal cruelty.

During the 2005-06 school year Pet Buddies were in 57 classes throughout 19 Charleston County Public Schools. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in these classes participated in activities that sponsor responsible pet care giving. They also collected pet toys, towels and treats for Pet Parent Adoption Kits, and applied for BARK scholarships to have their pets spayed or neutered free of charge.

BARK Scholarships are an important part of the Pet Buddies Program. BARK scholarships, an acronym for "Be Aware, Responsible, and Kind", are available to Pet Buddies who might not otherwise be able to afford to have their pets spayed and neutered. These scholarships are made available through Lisa’s Fund.

During the summer, the Pet Buddies Clubs will continue to offer classes that focus on the importance of pet care. Pet Buddies will have the opportunity to visit the shelter and to socialize with our furry friends. Participants will also assist in putting together Pet Parent Adoption Kits for pets who are adopted into new homes. Supplies such as dog and cat toys, bowls, brushes, collars, leashes, and treats are always needed for our Pet Parent Kits. Monetary donations for BARK scholarships and Lisa’s Fund are much appreciated and go towards spay/neuter surgeries.

Individuals who would like to make a donation to Lisa’s Fund and the BARK scholarships should send donations to the Charleston Animal Society, 3861 Leeds Ave., Charleston, S.C. 29405. Please designate the donation as "Lisa’s Fund." Individuals interested in participating in the classes or field trips are encouraged to contact Ann Ellison, Education Coordinator for the CAS, at (843) 747-4849 X209.

Woof to Read Program

Through the Woof to Read Program started by Ann Ellison for Charleston Animal Society volunteers bring pet therapy dogs to schools & libraries, & kids read to these furry audiences of one. The program helps reluctant readers, children with speech difficulties or learning disabilities, & students learning English. Pets are the perfect non judgemental listeners. Kids don't have to worry that a dog will giggle or smirk if they mispronounce a word, read slowly, stutter, or get frustrated. That wonderful dog will not tease, interrupt, laugh, or ask if they have done their homework.*Because of our wonderful volunteers, Woof to Read is successful & needs to expand into the elementary schools of North Charleston. So if you have a therapy dog, please contact Ann Ellison, Education Coordinator for CAS AT 747-4849 EXT.209. *
